Episode 3: Jo Tasker and Technopop

Jo Tasker

In this episode I speak to Jo Tasker, the founder and director of Technopop (www.technopop.co.uk), the social enterprise set up to engage children and young people with all things STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths). Its first event is Technopop London, a groundbreaking Science, Technology, Design and Innovation festival, aimed at 6-19 year olds, taking place in TIQ Stratford, East London, throughout October 2014.

Jo been developing Technopop for the past two years as a response to the UK technology skills gaps. As a business development consultant specialising in the construction industry, Jo was acutely aware of this gap, having worked with clients struggling to fill engineering roles who were looking, and even moving, overseas for talent. Research for the event revealed that the story is the same across all industries and 100,000 people are needed to enter the digital sector every year to ensure continued growth.

Technopop London, which is free to schools and colleges, is an immersive four-zoned exhibition and has interactive programme of scheduled activities and events across science, technology and the built environment. Each Thursday will be dedicated to Inspiring Women Across Industry, with careers and skills advice from across education and business, as well as from outstanding female role models working in the STEM industry today.

This is what we cover:

  • Background to the Technopop event and how and why it came about.
  • The shortage of your people working in and coming into Construction and Engineering.
  • The need to encourage children and young people to engage with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
  • STEM and how Diversity issues are being addressed – and Inspiring Women at Technopop.
  • The different areas covered over the four weeks from 8 October to 2 November 2014: : Week 1 Looking up; Week 2 In Touch with Technology; Week 3 Built Environment; Week 4 Sports Science and the Human Body
  • Main Challenge – Funding!
  • Getting the word out…
  • The venue and what will be there.
